Despite a weekend including a Mennonite picnic and a Jewish wedding (!) in the neighboring state, I had time to PAINT finally on Monday. Thank the LORD for holidays. I had a chance to try out a new paint of Joe's American Journey Vitruvius Blue, which is their version of Smalt (ground up cobalt glass, I think.) This is a sort of combination of cobalt blue light and periwinkle, very transparent and clear. In masstone, it's bright and light, which is a nice effect for a blue. I recommend trying it out (ignore the catalog error that says it comes with rubber clamp jaws, that is totally untrue.) I'm painting a series of portraits of New Mexican Pueblo people, from a series of photos from my late father who lived in Santa Fe and did a lot of local people in his photos. The main colors are perm rose (a pink blouse), coral and turquoise (for which I'm using touches of Andrew's Turquoise) and a lot of quin colors for the skin tones, along with yellows (Joe's Yellow or Hansa Yellow Medium). I'm mainly using Maimeriblu for the lack of granulation and the clarity, but putting in the Am Journey special colors I use for punch. I'm using a few Daniel Smith colors, all transparent--no earth pigments. So far I am at the middle wash stage and depending how I do this, it can take about 10 or more layers of glazes to get the finished portrait. I'll post a picture here and there. |
