Joanna is spot on! In life, in any field of endeavor, you win some and lose some. The secret is persistence and hard work -- and the objective, friendly, honest critique of other accomplished artists, pointing out ways we might have improved our planning, materials, approach and actual technical process. Don't give up. Doing the same wrong things over and over will, of course, not produce better results -- but if we can continually gain helpful insight and instruction, trying again and again will in time eventually produce better and more consistent results.

Hey, Lenoir, it happens. I go from amazing even myself to utter disgust. It's strange--you can be on your game then fall right off. I am teaching a class right now; the last class, I knocked off a very successful painting while standing up and wandering around to coach the students. This class, it was embarrassing. Nothing to speak of came out from my brush.

I just paint on the backside of the failures or I do a lot of color mix swatches and palette tests until the "paint-thing" kicks into gear again.

I have been painting most of my life.....lately I feel like I am just producing waste..I know I can cut them up to make collages but that doesn't make me feel very successful as an artist......I find a style or technique I really do well in then it goes away.....does anyone else experience this? I guess I'm in a stuck mode......can anyone help?

I'm concerned that the link I initially sent takes you to only one segment of the video clips that explain some of Turner's techniques. This link should take you to the main page, with links to all the clips!

Eugene, you are a kind fellow to be generous with your work at that age! I can understand the problem of unsteady hands and am so sorry that you are dealing with Parkinson's. Somebody should have put you on video sooner! I do remember the step by step demo you posted on another thread some time ago, but Jacator may not have seen it -- it wouldn't hurt to post it again.

It may be that you were not able to open the thread if you do not have your email options set to receive HTML -- which turns a printed web address into a blue link you can click on. You should be able to cut and paste the address into the address box on your browser and access it that way.

Jacator, I'm glad you were able to access the clips and enjoyed them. I still wish Cheap Joe's would produce longer segments of the instructional videos they sell -- the segments presently on the You Tube site are much too brief to really get a feel for the artist and his or her technique and know whether the video would be a useful continuing reference or not.

Howdy Eugene,
I had the same problem with accessing the video clips. I was using the Safari Web browser on a Macintosh computer, so I switch to the Firefox browser and it worked.

Griz- thanks for sharing the video clips. These are fascinating.

Griz- couldn't open the turner clips. My technique is no secret-- just plain transparent watercolor with some masking sometimes.I think my way of painting is very much like the techniques of John Pike, if you've ever read his books.
I find that I am relying more on masking ,since my hand isn't as steady as it once was. Just turned 84 and have some problems with Parkinson's, although the tremors are mostly when my hand is at rest.
I've never done any videos but I think I do have a step by step demo I could post, if you think that would be of help to
anyone.

I found this very interesting bit online demonstrating some of Turner's techniques. Wish we had similar clips of Eugene and Marie in process with their paintings!
