Ampersand Aquabord (clayboard textured) is sealed as follows :

3 spray coats of Krlon UV acrylic sdealer followed by four coats of Golden Satin UV varnish.

This is straight from the horse's mouth--I just (Fri and sat) took a clayboard/ watercolor workshop from Karen Vernon, Ampersand's main spokesperson on watercolor on clayboard (aquabord)

Hi--

I was at the art supply store the other day and one of the clerks also works at ampersand (I live in Austin, Texas where Ampersand is located). He said clayboard fixative is no longer made and recommended Lascaux, made in switzerland. I got it to seal an Aquabord watercolor painting I did as a Christmas gift and it was absolutely perfect. The best I've used. Also in the running, he said, is Sennelier oil pastel fixative.

I've used Ampersand's fixative and found it to be a bit cloudy....even after drying. So, instead, I used a matte acrylic spray and it worked great.

My painting was a large watercolor of a sea turtle.

Frankly, I prefer Clayboard Textured....which I believe is now called Watermedia board....to be the BEST of all worlds for watercolors and acrylics. However, it will take a bit of getting used to.

I got the fixative from Ampersand in Austin, Texas. But I would suggest using the clear matte acrylic sprays instead since it is handier to acquire.

I haven't used any of the fixatives, but I can point you to an interesting article in this month's issue of Palette. There is a method for mounting watercolors using a kind of wax on the surface.

Hello everyone,

I am beginning to paint in watercolor on Ampersand Aquabord, formerly Claybord Textured, and I would like to find out if anyone on the board has attempted to seal this material.

Ampersand recommends using:
1. Claybord fixative for waterbased artwork, which makes the surface waterproof and protects is. However, I have not been able to find this anywhere; it is sold out everywhere!
2. They then recommend brushing on Golden Acrylic UV Filtering Varnish satin for UV protection and archival finish.

In searching for products online, I have the following questions:

1a. Did anyone use the Claybord fixative and what was your experience? Where did you purchase it?

1b. I found a few other watercolor sealers, most notably: Blair Spray Matte Fixative and Lascaux Fine Art Fixative - both say to seal watercolor. Did anyone use these and what was your experience? Could these be used in lieu of the above Claybord fixative?

2a. Could I use Golden Archival Spray Varnish instead of the Golden Acrylic Polymer Varnish (brush-on)? Is there a difference in performance?

2b. I also found Krylon 1305 UV resistant clear acrylic spray - is this interchangeable with the above Golden products?

I would much appreciate your help! Thanks from Anna
