I tend to go for muted colors with a touch of something bright.

I spent a few minutes this weekend looking at Turners, Girtins and other 18th Century watercolors, which (aside from Turner) tend to be quite muted. Then I made up a few flesh mixes from terre vert, Burgundy yellow ochre and Venetian red (all natural earths) and looked at the muted tones. I realized that when painting portraits or any subject, you can go BRIGHT or subtle, as the mood strikes you or as your own artistic vision takes you.

I like bright colors to paint with (at least these days, I do) but recently, I decided muted portraits could equally be interesting to do.

What do you like to paint? Super hot brights or misty, muted tones that convey a quiet mood? I'm a split personality here, myself.
