The Union(South Carolina) County Arts Council sponsors an annual exhibition and watercolor workshop. We are looking for potential realistic transparent watercolor jurors/instructors for September, 2010. If interested, please send your information to ucac@bellsouth.com.

Take a look at the videos by Creative Catalyst Productions (they have a web site). They have a whole series of artists you can learn from at home. I think Cheap Joes sells a bunch of these as well. They produced the Jan Kunz videos.

To Anonymous in Sauk City.
I agree with John Preston that a video is the next best thing to a workshop. You can look over the instructor's shoulder, observe closeup his brushstrokes, amount of water he uses, his palette, and the commentary that goes with it all; then replay the tape to see it again and again. It is difficult to grasp all of the information the first time anyway.

I am a video junkie and can comment only on some of the tapes I have. For a beginner, "Getting Started Right" by Jan Kunz is good. For technique the videos by Tom Lynch are excellent, also "Watercolor..Wades Way" by Robert Wade, "Capturing the Essence of a Bouquet" by Janet Walsh; "Painting Roses in Crystal" by Jan Kunz. (flowers are my favorite subject). There are many more available. Check out Cheap Joe's catalog.

There are many good art books. "The Complete Guide to Watercolor Painting" by the great Edgar A. Whitney is a classic, covering all of the basics to his emphasis on the 8 Principles and 7 Elements of Design.

We cannot live long enough to learn it all, but it is fun trying.

Anonymous,
If it's hard to get out of the house, the closest thing to seeing a live instructor would be a video. Perhaps some of the other folks on this board could recommend a good video or two.
